Fatima’s journey is one of resilience, growth, and transformation—a story that resonates with around 200 other women and girls who have been part of the first phase of the Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Project, generously funded by the French Embassy in Nigeria and implemented by Neem Foundation.
In Fatima’s own words: “I first learned about this program from a friend, and I was fortunate enough to be selected as a beneficiary. Before joining, life was very challenging. I struggled to afford basic necessities and felt weighed down by depression and anxiety, constantly worrying about the future. But joining this program gave me hope, something to look forward to each day. The support and encouragement I received from my fellow beneficiaries made me feel like I wasn’t alone.”
Fatima’s training was in sewing—a skill that has become her passion and a source of independence. “Through this program, I learned how to sew clothes from scratch. I started with the basics, and now I am able to sew beautifully, which has brought me a steady stream of customers from different parts of town. The feeling of having people recognize my work and trust me with their designs is incredible.”
Beyond sewing, Fatima also benefited from digital skills training, which has been instrumental in expanding her reach. “The digital skills we learned allow me to promote my services online, connecting with customers I would never have met otherwise. Now I can advertise my work and interact with people beyond my local community.”
Today, Fatima is more than just a seamstress; she is a mentor and a role model. “With the confidence and skills I’ve gained, I’m now able to contribute financially to my family, and I’ve started teaching my younger siblings and others in my community. This experience has made me realize my potential and has given me a new sense of purpose.”
Fatima’s success is not just her own but a ripple effect that spreads through her family and her community. “I am incredibly grateful to Neem Foundation and the French Embassy in Nigeria for this unique opportunity. They have given me the tools to change my story and, in turn, help others. For the first time, I feel like the future is bright for me.”
Fatima’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact that vocational and digital skills training can have—not only in uplifting individuals but in empowering communities to build a brighter, more self-sufficient future.
